NRG -- the developer behind the majority of the solar installations sweeping the NFL -- went big in Landover, Md. Last year around this time, FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Redskins, debuted what is believed to be the largest solar installation at any NFL stadium. On game days, FedEx Field's solar array -- which consists of three different types of solar panels, and is rated at 2 megawatts of generating capacity -- provides for up to 20 percent of the stadium’s total power needs. On non-game days, this solar system has the capacity to essentially take the stadium off the grid, providing for 100 percent of the electricity it requires. Arrive at FedEx Field in your electrical vehicle and you're in for another green perk: 10 electric vehicle charging stations from NRG’s eVgosm charging network, exclusively for fan use. Solar power at the stadium comes courtesy of solar shade structures in the parking lots, translucent solar panels, and a specially designed sculpture created using thin film solar tech. The Redskins expect their use of solar power keep 1,780 metric tons of carbon out of the atmosphere each year.
